W-470 plan raises too many concerns
The Indian Peaks group of the Sierra Club would like to thank several community leaders in Boulder County for submitting an important letter to the Corridor Consensus Committee of the Northwest Corridor Environmental Impact Statement. This EIS is for the W-470 freeway project, from Interstate 70 near Golden to U.S. 36 near Interlocken, that the Colorado Department of Transportation wants to build to complete the beltway around Denver.
In their letter dated Oct. 5, Boulder City Council member Andy Schultheiss, Boulder County Commissioner Will Toor, Louisville Mayor Charles Sisk, and Superior Mayor Mark Hamilton expressed strong concerns about (among other things) the impacts the project would have on open spaces, the improper elimination of an alternative involving modest local road improvements and the strong negative impacts that the W-470 project would have on the city of Golden. They also wrote, "We believe that there are far higher regional priorities for investment of limited transportation funds."
We at the Sierra Club agree, and we hope that the letter will help make sure that these concerns are considered more seriously in the EIS. Even if CDOT continues to ignore them, the strong letter might help keep the W-470 beltway low on the priority lists for funding, so that our tax money can be used for more beneficial projects.
