Politicians intransigent on northwest beltway
I really appreciated "Road fight is hardy perennial/Citizen group keeps slugging away at plans for beltway," the fine Dec. 12 News article about Citizens Involved in the Northwest Quadrant.
Too many citizens who are not familiar with the northwest area seem to think that the beltway is simply a logical thing to do. This could not be further from the truth, as proven by the CINQ studies. During the initial studies, which were done by citizens at the county level, even the representative from the federal government stated that no federal monies would be available as there was no demonstrable need for a completed beltway.
Some people, who were not mentioned in the article, came up with two very plausible scenarios for alleviating the traffic problems in the corridor. However, the politicians had already predetermined the route, and were not interested in investigating any alternatives.
I hope that more citizens will have the opportunity to be heard. Even better would be if the special interests would allow our politicians to actually listen.
