Lack of trust in CDOT, Norton hurt Ref D
The Monday morning quarterbacks have been busy putting their views, spins and explanations about why Referendum D failed. I can offer one explanation - a complete lack of trust in the Colorado Department of Transportation and its head, Tom Norton.
I knocked on a lot of doors during this campaign. Citizen after citizen expressed concern that the D bond funds or funds freed up through Referendum C would be used to drive a high-speed beltway down the throat of Golden residents. Many mentioned the Environmental Impact Study of the proposed "beltway," considered badly flawed by many environmental experts, that has cost millions and may cost millions more. They asked me why these funds weren't directed toward some of the more than $60 billion in needs for roads and bridges across Colorado.
Clearly a slim majority of voters were willing to take a time out on the Taxpayer's Bill of Rights. But these same voters weren't about to vote for D which they felt would let Norton and CDOT create a billion-dollar highway boondoggle.
