4 governments raise concerns over beltway-link process

By Ann Schrader
Denver Post Staff Writer

Four northwest metro governments have joined in raising "grave concerns" about how alternatives have been screened for the proposed 22-mile "missing link" in the metro beltway.

Officials from Boulder County and the cities of Boulder, Louisville and Superior will present a letter today listing eight concerns about the environmental-impact-statement process to a large committee working on the document.

The letter "expresses the deep concerns of these four jurisdictions over the direction the EIS is heading," said the Boulder County Commissioner Will Toor.

The impact statement, coordinated the the Colorado Department of Transportation, is focused on traffic improvements for an area between where the Northwest Parkway ends and where Interstate 70, U.S. 6 and C-470 converge.

Over two years, the initial list of 73 alignments has been whittled to four, with all passing through Golden on Colorado 93. Golden officials have been adamant in opposing the beltway's completion.

Improvements to existing arterial streets were not adequately considered, the letter states.

Open-space impacts are questioned, with officials saying the largest impact is likely to be road-related development.
