Another perennial favorite on this annual list is the proposed completion of the beltway, possibly running through Golden. One year later and highway backers seem no closer to laying asphalt than they were in 2004.
Golden residents displeased with the beltway proposal were pleased with their city government for passing a law trying to keep highways out of their city. Not so fast, said the state transportation department, arguing state law and metrowide transport concerns trump city rulings.
Opponents received another boost in October when city officials in Boulder, Superior and Louisville told the state they were concerned about environmental impacts of a major highway skirting the Rocky Flats site and the northwest edge of the metro area.
In other news, Golden officials tried to exaggerate the impact of minor developments, such as a lowered bond rating for an existing quadrant of the beltway, and the departure of a mediation firm from beltway discussions. Arvada officials were unimpressed on all counts, and they continue to fight for the highway.
