State Representative Gwyn Green, D-Golden/Lakewood sits on the State Transportation and Energy Committee and has worked tirelessly on toll road and transportation issues for years. She released the following statement today:
When the Executive Director of the Northwest Parkway Public Highway Authority, Steve Hogan, testified before the transportation committee a year ago, I asked him if the Northwest Parkway was financially secure. He reassured me that the parkway was fiscally sound and doing great. Later, I find out that the tax-exempt bonds were downgraded, and then became junk bonds. I have to question how Mr. Hogan made this assertion about the parkway. Either he wasn’t truthful or he didn’t know what was happening in his own organization.
I warned Mr. Hogan from the beginning that this parkway wasn’t fiscally sound. Once again, I restate that toll roads are not a good investment for the state.
Next year Rep. Green will work to set up an independent board to examine the state’s transportation needs in the future and how to pay for them. She also wants to establish another independent board to review tolling projects in terms of their impacts on congestion, economic development, communities impacted and financial worthiness.
During the 2006 legislative session she sponsored a highway noise mitigation bill that was signed by Gov. Owens.
