Alert for Rocky Flats Activists
by Lorraine Higbie Fairmont and LeRoy Moore - Rocky Mountain Peace and Justice Center
Do you remember when we rallied to hear Daniel Ellsberg at Rocky Flats, some 10,000+ strong? When we sat on the railroad tracks and 300 were arrested in their determination to close the nuclear weapons plant? Or when 17,000 of us encircled the entire plant linked arm to arm? We were passionate activists, and, yes, thanks to all of you, we accomplished our mission to close down the bomb factory in our backyard.
The vital work we began more than 30 years ago, however, is still unfinished. Do you recall Local Hazard, Global Threat? The global threat posed by Rocky Flats persists in all those plutonium pits that form the fissile core of every nuclear warhead in the far-flung US arsenal. Work for nuclear abolition continues, and we applaud all who are engaged in this urgent activity.
But there's also the local hazard. Our children and our children's children will inherit a legacy of plutonium contamination that will endure for hundreds of generations. Rocky Flats is a local hazard forever, yet the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service intends to turn much of the site of the defunct bomb plant into a wildlife refuge open for public recreation. Imagine, playing with plutonium!
The "cleanup" of the site was inadequate. There is no safe level of exposure to the plutonium left behind in breathable particles, and its 24,000-year half-life means that any quantity remaining in the environment poses a permanent danger. We need to ensure that our grandchildren and the grandchildren of others don't hike the refuge, don't track plutonium back into their homes, and most importantly don't inhale specks that in time can ravage their health.
In the face of this situation, the Rocky Mountain Peace and Justice Center is issuing "A Call to Guardianship" for Rocky Flats, and we invite you to join us. Nuclear Guardianship is a community-based activity that works at the nexus of art, science, and spirituality to protect people and the environment from further radioactive poisoning. We will enable others to join us in taking responsibility for what we humans have done at Rocky Flats. We want to convert a negative legacy of contamination into a positive example of ecological caretaking.
In the opening months of 2011 we will initiate our Rocky Flats Nuclear Guardianship project with a series of presentations and interactive workshops. Participants will explore all facets of both the problem and the possibilities. What we learn will be shared with others locally, regionally and globally.
Back in the 80's when many of us were active in the movement to close Rocky Flats, we had a groundswell of support. Today, even though the bomb-production has ended, our ongoing efforts are as important as ever. We at RMPJC seek your endorsement, your financial support, and to the fullest extent possible your direct participation as the Rocky Flats Nuclear Guardianship project unfolds over the next fifteen months. For more details and to see the amazing array of planned presenters, go to http://www.rmpjc.org/RF+Call+to+Guardianship+Description.
We need to raise $30,000 for a six-month education and arts initiative to stop the refuge from ever being opened, to demand ongoing respirable dust studies that determine the presence of plutonium, and to invigorate a movement for the responsible care of radioactive materials. Your grandchildren and their grandchildren will be grateful for your help in making Nuclear Guardianship happen. Let's once again "encircle" Rocky Flats with the truth.
In peace,
Lorraine Higbie Fairmont and LeRoy Moore
