Parkway a high-cost road to nowhere
Build it and someone will pay a toll to drive on it. That seems to be the attitude of road planners these days.
Maybe the people who talk about, write about and run the Northwest Parkway should try actually using it. Going west it ends pretty much no place that anyone wants to be. The Jefferson County/Golden people are vocal about not letting a toll road go farther west, so no viable plan for a real destination exists.
The management line is $2 for 10 miles. For area usage, the real cost is much higher. The parkway access ramps had to be designed for increased revenue rather than for local user convince. Again, try driving the area. Why is the Sheridan Parkway ramp actually 2 miles east of Sheridan Boulevard? The signs look good but the actual distances make the tolls a very bad investment in time as well as money.
Why not at least try to provide some value to local residents? Consider a discounted cost for transponders to local residents. We already know how to get around just as fast without the parkway, so why pay a ridiculous toll?
A new idea for selling the Northwest Parkway debt and management rights to a private source really means that the managers do not know what they were or are doing. They are getting some of the highest tolls per mile in the U.S. and still cannot make money.
The various excuses for low revenues are just hot air. Try earning my business by offering value and maybe this road will lead somewhere.
